Boston Landmarks Orchestra concerts are joyfully informal, where laughter is welcome, movement is encouraged, and kids being kids is all part of the experience. No need to “sit still and be quiet,” this is a relaxed, welcoming space designed for families.
It’s the perfect introduction to the orchestra, with plenty of ways for kids (and grown-ups) to connect with the music and create a memorable day together. From hands-on activities to interactive moments throughout the performance, there’s something for everyone.
Here is a taste of what your family can experience at a Landmarks concert:
Prelude Concerts
Arrive early to our Summer Concerts at the Hatch Shell to see young artists perform with Landmarks. Before the main event begins, the stage comes alive with talented young artists performing with Landmarks. It’s more than a performance, it’s a powerful moment of inspiration. By sharing the stage, these young performers show other kids in the audience that they belong there too.
These rising musicians come from partner organizations like Four Strings Academy, North End Music & Performing Arts Center, and Boston String Academy, for their moment in the spotlight at one of Boston’s most iconic outdoor venues.
Audience Participation
Landmarks concerts are all about music you can feel. Our programs feature diverse repertoire that invites audiences to dance, tap, clap, and move along. At every performance, there’s plenty of space for kids to move and explore, letting music lead the way. They are not sit-still-and-whisper concerts, they are joyful, interactive experiences.
Maestro Zone
As you face the Hatch Shell, look to the left and step into an interactive conducting zone where music comes to life. Kids and parents alike are invited to try their hand at conducting the orchestra, guided by one of our conducting fellows. Learn the essential conducting gestures, pick up a score, and follow the music in real time, just the the Maestro on stage.
It’s hands-on, fun, and a perfect way to experience the music from a whole new perspective. Come wave the baton and discover what it feels like to lead the orchestra!
Musical Playground
Kids don’t just watch the music, they jump right into it. At select concerts, young audience members can try real instruments for themselves, learning how to hold them and make their very first sounds. It’s hands-on, exciting, and inspiring.
This interactive experience is the perfect way for kids to discover what sparks their curiosity, and maybe even find the instrument they’ll fall in love with next.
Face Painting
A beloved summer concert tradition! Kids can transform into colorful characters, animals, or musical masterpieces while adding an extra splash of fun to their concert experience.
