EDUCATION & OUTREACH
Generously sponsored by
The Boston Landmarks Orchestra is proud to present music education programs and family concerts to engage the hearts and minds of young people and adults throughout Boston’s diverse neighborhoods.
It is committed to providing musical experiences to under-served youth. Among the many programs it provides are interactive activities that expose young people to live music and help them learn valuable listening, performance, and comprehension skills. These events help young people discover their love of music and foster a life long appreciation of the arts.
Musical Playgrounds and Neighborhood Concerts
Through our Education and Outreach Program, children have been able to participate in our free and exciting “musical playgrounds” in which they have the opportunity to try out a variety of orchestral instruments (trombones, violins, cellos, clarinets, violas, flutes, trumpets, and more!) led by a team of trained Education and Outreach staff and musicians. Many of these Playgrounds take place at our partner youth centers, but you can always catch our biggest Musical Playground during our annual Season Tune-Up Party each summer. We provide about 600 children (and children at heart!) in the Greater Boston area this educational opportunity each year.
Along with our interactive Musical Playgrounds, Boston Landmarks Orchestra presents community concerts in parks and other outdoor locations around the neighborhoods of Boston each summer. Locations for our neighborhood concerts have included the Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park, Mattapan Teen Center, Pinebank Promontory in Jamaica Plain, and Boston Children’s Museum. Where will we go to next?
Youth Partners in Concert
At Boston Landmarks Orchestra’s well-known and loved summer concert series over the years, children have had the chance to collaborate with professional composers in the creation and performance of new works, explored the roots of music with their own cultures, and performed alongside some of Boston’s finest professional musicians on the stage of the Hatch Memorial Shell. Recent youth who have shared the stage with the Orchestra include ZUMIX, Boston Ballet II, Camp Harbor View, Conservatory Lab Charter School, and so many more!
